Coming only weeks after the riots in Britain, which destroyed $300 million in property, scenes of Muslims storming through the streets of Paris are a troubling reminder of how the states of Western Europe run the risk of splitting apart. Recently several hundred Muslim men were filmed, gathered in the streets to protest the ban on praying in the streets. One Muslim man complained that members of his religion were “oppressed.” The man, wearing a keffiyah — the headscarf associated with Islamist and Palestinian militancy — threatened widespread violence in response, and told a film crew: Muslims “are going to pick up arms soon,” and that they were going to “rise up.” The same man said that Muslims had rights because they paid their taxes. He appeared to be upset at the ban on praying in the streets on all religions, since thousands of Muslims had been regularly gathering, and blocking, some streets in Paris, for midday prayers. The ban came into effect a week ago on Friday, but the French Government provided the worshippers with a disused Fire station, which holds up to 2,000 people, at a subsidized rate. The protester, who was speaking in a large crowd of Muslim protesters, said that the neighborhoods of Paris would one day “blow up… like gunpowder.” The several hundred protesters then prayed in the streets in defiance of the ban. Some were later filmed running through the streets waving the flag of Saudi Arabia and chanting “Allahu Akbar” and “death to the Jews.” A mosque and cultural center, costing more than 20 million Euros, is due to open next year to accommodate Paris’s Muslims.
