Hundreds of angry Muslims demonstrated on evening of Saturday, September 5, outside a major mosque in Alexandria, Egypt.

Muslims were demanding the government intervene to release a Christian woman who they believe had converted to Islam.

This demonstration was not the first, in fact, other similar demonstrations have taken place since Ramadan began nearly a month ago.

Demonstrators accused the government and some Muslim clerics of collusion in the alleged detention of a wife of a Coptic priest in the Upper Egypt city of Minya.

The priest’s wife disappeared weeks ago which triggered Coptic protests in her hometown and Cairo. There were rumors that she was abducted and forced to convert to Islam. Later, it was discovered that she had left her family’s house.

The Muslim protesters claimed that although she is converted to Islam she has been handed over to the Church authority.

Copts of Egypt number about 18 million, about 20% of Egypt’s population.
