The Director of Orman Secondary School for Girls, in Giza near Cairo, has converted the school, without any permission, into a religious institute. Director Huda Yusuf Izz Al-Din has, converted the whole school entrance into a Mosque, is spite of the school already having a special praying area. She has also installed a flag pole flying the green flag of the "Kaaba" higher than the pole carrying the Egyptian flag. The Director gave strict orders to the students when saluting the flag to start with the following sentence: "O girls of Egypt this is your rising flag, flying over the land of Egypt, Salute this flag under the banner of Islam"." This constitutes a discriminatory and religious-oriented educational process, leading to racist tendencies, which are contrary to the values of citizenship. It was also reported that Mrs. Izz Al-Din has a special dislike to Christians. She reprimands the Christian teachers for using the phrase "Believe me," which is a typical Coptic phrase, as they do not use the name of God in vain. Also Christian teachers are prevented from setting school exams, which are done by junior Muslim teachers. Ninety nine per cent of students wear the veil at school, which raises the question of whether Christian students are intimidated also into wear the veil.
Dr. Naguib Gabraeel, President of the Egyptian Union of Human Rights Organization, have submitted today a complaint, to the First Undersecretary of the Ministry of Education, Dr. Reda Abu Serei, against the Director’s single handed decision, to convert the school into a religious institute, "the educational institutes should deal with the process of education and are not places of worship, discriminating between a Muslim and a Copt", stated the complaint.
