He held an emergency meeting of the cabinet on Sunday, amid indications that Egypt’s conservative Islamic movement, led by Salafis, was becoming increasingly restive about the country’s traditional secular environment.

Syrian security forces shot dead three women who were taking part in all-women protest on Saturday near the coastal city of Banias, which was stormed by troops, backed by tanks. Pro-democracy residents formed human chains in a bit to halt the military operations.
