Three people were killed as protesters and policemen clashed in Egypt on Tuesday. Two of the dead were protesters killed in Suez. The third was a police officer who was hit in the head by a rock in Cairo. Protesters reported beatings and arrests as well.
Tuesday, United States Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice called on the UN to fire Richard Falk, a UN human rights official who has been harshly critical of Israel. The U.S. wants Falk fired over comments he made regarding the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
Riots north and south of Israel spread as the “Tunisia effect†hits Egypt, where police used tear gas on tens of thousands protesters trying to produce a momentum that could topple the regime of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. North of the border, Sunni Muslims rioted against the Hizbullah political coup.
Hizbullah scored a bloodless coup Tuesday and is set to become Israel’s new political neighbor to the north, but the shadows of civil war stalk the streets of Beirut.
