Egypt’s former Tourism Minister Zoheir Garranah was given a three year jail sentence on Sunday for unlawfully issuing company licenses, the latest jail term for ex-officials who served under ousted President Hosni Mubarak. The state news agency said Garranah was sentenced for issuing licenses for tourist companies in violation of an order that no new licenses be awarded. Garranah also a businessman is already serving a separate five-year jail term for squandering public funds after being sentenced in May. Steel magnate Ahmed Ezz was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Friday. Former Trade Minister Rachid Mohammed Rachid, who remains at large, was sentenced to 15 years in the same case. In May, Mubarak’s security chief Habib el-Adly became the first of some two dozen detained regime leaders to be convicted. He was sentenced to 12 years for money laundering and other corruption charges. Since Mubarak was ousted in a popular uprising in February, protesters have demanded that officials accused of abusing their positions during his 30 years in office be held to account. Mubarak himself is on trial over the deaths of demonstrators and corruption charges, and pictures of him appearing in court in a cage have been one of the defining images of the wave of revolts sweeping across the Arab world.
