Cairo: Egyptian health authorities on Monday continued a nationwide programme to slaughter pigs in the country as a precautionary measure against swine flu.

The government decision has been met with protests by pig farmers, who on Sunday clashed with police over the state decision.

On Monday, police were deployed in force around the Cairo slum district of Manshiyet Nasr.

"The culling has continued today in Manshiyet Nasr, three trucks have already taken pigs to be culled," said Ishak Mikhail, who heads the Muqattam Rubbish Collectors Association.

Egypt began the slaughter of 250,000 pigs on Saturday, despite the World Health Organisation saying there was no evidence the animals were transmitting swine flu to humans.
