"Getting Out of the Dark Tunnel"

For the Enactment of the Unified Law for Building of Places of Worship

Getting Out of the Dark Tunnel and into the Light:The Unified Law for Building of Places of Worship.

The apparent authorities' intransigence in issuing a decree to build a church, which was originally made of mud bricks until it became dilapidated and collapsed, led to the collapse of four neighbouring houses, the death of eight young Copts and the injury of four others under the rubble of the houses.

Now begings a new page in the suffering of the Copts in Egypt, those who suffer because of a climate of sectarian tension which has not been witnessed since hundreds of years.

This serious incident, which points to a serious turning point, could lead to the loss of thousands of Coptic lives in similar intransigence to the building of a larger church in the near future.

This issue puts a serious responsibility, which cannot be ignored any longer, on the shoulders of everyone in Egypt; it is the right of the Egyptian citizen who has a right to full citizenship, to renovate, develop, demolish and construct houses of worship without any interference whether political or from security authorities or the community, according to a law governing the construction of religious buildings and places of worship which is not subject to politics or dependent on circumstances, whims or mutual deals.

Away with all the words being said at each plight of the Copts ..

Away with all the words being said for consolation or promises for solutions which never materialize, or laws which are never passed.

We call upon the whole society to move away from sectarianism and discrimination, which violates the rights ..

We make an appeal to the Egyptian people from all walks of life..

We call upon everyone to unite regardless of religion, sex, creed or doctrine..
